Abstract

Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET) under the National Plan for Music Education is a relatively new model for teaching and learning in music education in England. This study identifies the key qualities for WCET planning and delivery as perceived by seasoned WCET educators while examining the alignment between higher education curricula and the profession's demands.

The role of a WCET tutor stands as a linchpin connecting Music Education Hubs (MEHs), schools, and students. Charged with initiating primary school students into music, these educators are responsible for being proficient musical facilitators. Negotiating primary classroom challenges demands organisational prowess, creativity, collaboration, pedagogical acumen, and effective communication. Expertise in music and one's instrument remains paramount.

Identified requisites encompassing skills, knowledge, experience, and qualifications vital for a career in WCET draw insights from both WCET and classroom specialists. This examination juxtaposes the training afforded to music undergraduate students, aiming to discern the alignment and gaps within this continuum.

The study reveals shortcomings in training at undergraduate and early-career stages, potentially behind the evolving demands of effective WCET delivery. Pedagogical opportunities remain optional, and inter-MEH support lacks standardised guidelines, including training and observation protocols. This study elucidates a need for collaborative efforts between Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) and MEHs to bridge these gaps and ensure learners receive the highest quality tuition.

Key research questions centred on planning and executing the WCET experience in English primary schools, coupled with an assessment of the adequacy of the music undergraduate experience in preparing aspirants for the WCET profession, underpin this study's objectives. These objectives entail comprehending established benchmarks for graduating music students, prospective WCET tutors, and the essential practices of WCET tutor qualities, corroborated through insights from professional perspectives of WCET tutors, MEH management, and trained musical pedagogues.
