    Abstract

This study investigated the underlying dynamics behind knowledge management and the key success factors for driving effective knowledge management within consultancy firms. For consultancy firms, knowledge is the key to competitive advantage and enduring success. This study aimed to provide a holistic view of knowledge management activities and their relationship to knowledge management success, as well as the drivers for
participation in these activities. Consequently, the study first analysed knowledge management activities and their contribution to knowledge management success. It then investigated key success factors for motivating consultants to participate in these knowledge management activities. The study was conducted through a questionnaire of purposively selected managers and senior consultants at medium and large-sized German consulting firms. The results implied that knowledge management
practitioners should focus their activities on codification and sharing of knowledge. To motivate consultants to participate in knowledge management activities, they should implement appropriate technology, attach the name of the creator to knowledge and encourage leaders to reward participation in
knowledge management activities. Further research should focus on the relationship between knowledge creation and knowledge codification and sharing, as well as the connection between knowledge management systems and career progression in consulting firms.
