    Abstract

Background: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among men living in the UK. Approximately, 50% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer undergo Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT). However, some men who undergo ADT experience cognitive changes, including problems with memory.
Aim: The aim of this thesis was to investigate memory changes linked to ADT for prostate cancer and to develop an intervention to help men manage memory changes
Methods: Intervention mapping was used as a guide to exploring memory changes and developing an intervention. This involved (1) a narrative literature review to evaluate the effects of ADT on cognition; (2) semi-structured interviews to explore men’sexperiences of memory changes, impact on quality of life (QOL) and support requirements; (3) a review of interventions for memory changes in cancer populations; (4) a review of interventions for adults with mild cognitive changes; (5) development of an intervention; and (6) evaluation and improvement of acceptability of the intervention.
Results: The intervention is a self-management booklet (called MEMORY MANager) consisting of six sections. Section 1 outlines the booklet. Section 2 explains memory changes and the link to ADT. Section 3 helps men assess their memory. Section 4 describes techniques to improve mood. Section 5 describes skills and strategies to reduce forgetfulness. Section 6 offers advice on setting goals and creating plans to manage memory. Each section ends with tasks to reinforce learning.
Discussion: Memory changes can adversely affect QOL (e.g., daily activities, relationships and emotional wellbeing). This thesis presents the first support tool developed to help men manage memory changes linked to ADT. It is based on an assessment of men’s needs, previous interventions and theory and is considered acceptable by men.
Conclusion: Future research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of the booklet in improving memory complaints, mood and QOL and how it can be implemented in practice.
