The need for surface engineering in various sectors such as the healthcare and automotive industries has increased over the last 10 years. This is borne out of the fact that, for numerous applications, no more can be done to improve a material’s adhesion performance by working from the bulk to the surface and as a result of this, it is now time to concentrate on the material surfaces to optimize their adhesion properties. With the increase in necessity for surface engineering, laser surface engineering is becoming more widely used in both research and in many industries to bring about these necessary surface modifications. This Chapter provides insight into the implementation of lasers to surface engineer polymeric materials for the manipulation of their wettability characteristics and discusses the latest state-of-the-art knowledge and understanding in the field.
