Abstract
Higher education motivates students to adopt an inquisitive attitude, if not to carry out their own applied research. As professionals, however, you have to deal with a daily stream of new publications of scientific and applied research. How can you make good use of this knowledge and judge it? Research results sometimes contradict each other. There is doubt about the validity and reliability of the knowledge. Then what's the point? How do you value existing and new knowledge? What does this mean for you acting as a professional? How do you talk to colleagues about this, at work or in your professional association? Where do you get additional information? How do you separate the chaff from the wheat? This book focuses on (future) nurses and social workers. It provides insight into usefulness, relevance and application of new knowledge for the profession. As a guide, it guides young professionals into a world that is also rather confusing for researchers. The message is clear: research, innovation and critical reflection are of great importance for practice. In ten cases, experienced researchers affiliated with higher education explain how they support practice. Knowledge works. Jaap van der Stel is Lecturer in mental health care at Leiden University of Applied Sciences and researcher GGZ-inGeest.
