Abstract

A method is provided for controlling a host vehicle operable in an autonomous mode, comprising: receiving a first location signal indicative of a location of the vehicle 3410; receiving one or more sensed characteristics of at least a portion of a first area in a vicinity of the vehicle 3420; receiving a location of a second area relative to the first area 3430, the second area being in a vicinity of the first area; determining a location of the vehicle relative to the second area 3440 in dependence on the first location signal, the one or more sensed characteristics of the first area, and the location of the second area relative to the first area; and when operating in an autonomous mode, autonomously controlling the vehicle 3450 to navigate to a navigation goal within the second area utilising the location of the vehicle relative to the second area. The sensed characteristics may comprise a location of one or more structural features associated with the first area, and may be compared to reference data indicative of reference characteristics of the first area.
