Abstract
Today’s manufacturers are going through unpredictable changes as a result of global competition. For technology-driven industries such as telecommunications, the challenge is even greater as product life cycles get shorter and new technologies emerge rapidly. Conventional manufacturing paradigms are no longer adequate to deal with product diversification and customization. While computer-controlled equipment and automation have taken over many labor-intensive tasks, where manual tasks remain, it has become apparent that proficiency in adopting the new methods and technologies would sharpen the competitive advantage.
