Abstract
The nine military coups in Africa since 2020 are not homogenous. There is a diversity in causes and purposes behind these coups. However, there is a striking similarity among all the putschist leaders after their coups - a desire to hold onto power for as long as possible. A key reason for this uptick in coups has been a lack of consistent regional, continental and international response where some coups have been de-facto recognized and others not.
