The Role of Preoperative Liver-Reducing Diets Before Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Up to 90% of patients undergoing metabolic/bariatric surgery (MBS) have metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), which presents a technical challenge for surgeons to carry out surgery laparoscopically due to the requirement for liver retraction. Hence, short-term liver-reducing diets (LRDs) are usually recommended during the period immediately prior to MBS. This chapter discusses the international variation in LRDs utilised in clinical practice and compares the effectiveness of various formulations, durations and energy compositions of LRDs in terms of weight loss and liver reduction prior to MBS
