Abstract

The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 had a devastating impact on the Palestinian people which known as al-nakba (the catastrophe). It is estimated that about 700,000 Palestinians were forced out of their homes or fled the war to become refugees either in the West Bank and Gaza Strip or in the neighbouring Arab countries. It is estimated that up to 160,000 Palestinians remained within their homeland, reduced to minority, losing their connection with the rest of the Palestinians.
