The Investigation of Food Wastage in Chinese Universities - Taking the China Agricultural University as a Case

Abstract

The food wastage in China has become a common phenomenon. The purpose of this investigation was to search the amount of food wasted in order to find out the money wasted, soil wasted, and how many hungry people could be helped by saving this amount of food. Some reasons of wasting food were found as well. Survey was the main method used in this study. After the data analysis, it was found that the Chinese universities dining-rooms waste approximately 112,555,470RMB, 9,413,288m2 and 1,317.65 units of football pitch of soil in one year just from cooked rice from suppers; there would be 39,744.45 Chinese hungry people who can be saved from starvation for one year using those cooked rice. It can be seen that the food wastage phenomenon in Chinese universities is serious.
