Abstract
Staff fatigue and workload pressures are contributing factors to nasogastric tube (NGT) misplacement ‘Never Events’ resulting in patient deaths1,2. The British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and UK Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch recommended a review of professions suited to support in NGT positioning and identified Registered Dietitians (RDs) as suitable professionals1,2. This study aimed to explore RDs' opinions on the advanced skills of positioning NGTs and to explore the perceived impact of these skills on professional practice.
111 RDs participated in this cross-sectional study (91.8% worked acutely and 18.2% already positioned NGTs). From 13/03/2021 to 13/05/2021 an online survey using closed and open questions, and Likert scales was distributed to UK RDs. Qualitative data was assessed via thematic analysis. Statistical analysis was performed with IBM SPSS version 28, using a Chi-Square test of independence (P<0.05) and Bonferroni corrected Mann-Whitney U test (P<0.016). Ethical approval was granted by the Birmingham City University Health, Education and Life Sciences Faculty Academic Ethics Committee (#9188).
