Abstract

This introductory chapter reflects on the tension between a world full of religion and belief, and public spheres which have largely lost the ability to talk well about them. It sets out an early response in the Religious Literacy Leadership Programme, and considers the many conceptual, theoretical and methodological conundrums this has bought to the surface. It poses the challenge explored in the rest of the book: how do all of us engage in this pressing conversation, regardless of our own religion, belief or none?
