Recent Developments in Membranes for Flow Batteries

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter delves into the study of membranes for flow batteries (FBs), exploring their recent developments and challenges. We offer a detailed discussion on the influential characteristics of membranes at the FB level and the membrane level. Furthermore, this chapter thoroughly summarizes recent developments on various types of membranes, including proton exchange, anion exchange, amphoteric ion exchange, and porous membranes, for FB applications. Various aspects of membranes, including ion transport, performance and durability in batteries, and strategies behind the fabrication and modification of membranes, are presented. Finally, perspectives on future membrane research trends relevant to next-generation FB are highlighted.
