Abstract
In this case, prisoners complained that they had been subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment because of their subordinate status in an unofficial prisoner hierarchy in Russian correctional facilities. This hierarchy was supported by an informal code of conduct of the criminal underworld commonly referred to as “the rules”, the code-dividing prisoners into four major categories or “castes”.
