Abstract
Important to separate policy towards Portugal's five former colonies from ties with the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, where influence and interests are marginal, with the exception of South Africa, which hosts a 300,000 strong Portuguese community. Policy towards Algeria and Morocco is also increasingly driven by the politics of proximity, migration, and energy security.
