Abstract
Building on the foundation established in Part I, the chapters in Part II focus more specifically on the role officiating associations and leaders in those organizations have in both recruiting and retaining qualified, competent sports officials. In this chapter, we highlight key findings and contributions from the five chapters in Part II. A primary finding is the need for sports organizations to create environments in which officials know they are valued and supported; in doing so the performance levels will improve, and so too will mental health outcomes. Other key findings presented in Part II highlight the need for holistic training and development programs, how intentionally developed mentorship programs can positively impact officiating associations, and why creating a sense of community among sports officials is a key factor in both recruitment and retention. Based on the chapters, we offer four specific and detailed recommendations to enhance recruitment of new officials and improve retention as well.
