Abstract
Ever since the conclusion of the peace treaty between the Sudanese government and the South Sudanese Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/SPLA) in 2005, the European Union has been committed to active engagement in peacebuilding in the region. This commitment was expanded with the secession of South Sudan in July 2011 and developed into a test case for a pan-European response to a long-term foreign policy challenge. However, these efforts are limited, especially in terms of their impact on peacebuilding in the various Sudanese conflicts, particularly in the North-South conflict and in Darfur.
