Abstract
Technique: black ink stamped on two blank pages of an old Espasa Encyclopedia.
I created this artwork for the Espasado collective exhibition at the Palacio de Moctezuma (Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cáceres, Regional Government of Extremadura, Spain), 10 Dec 2021 – 28 Feb 2022. Each of the participants was given a volume from an old edition of the Espasa Encylopedia, for it to be "intervened".
The works ‘Pérez + Osete‘ and ‘La Gran Ladronera’ re-insert into the the Espasa Encylopedia two figures who were removed from it: José Pérez Hervás and Flora Osete (Silva-Villar, L., & Silva Villar, S. 2015a). It is done by means of two stamps, created with letters reproduced from the very encyclopedia to impress a couple of acronyms on pages extracted from it too.
The first piece inserts the surnames ‘Pérez’ and ‘Osete’ as merged on the acronym Preziossette, which was coined by the family themlseves. The consonants in the surname ‘Osete’ were already duplicated on the traslation of the book Woman and Labour (Olive Schreiner, 1914), published as La mujer y el trabajo (1919) with Flora Ossette creadited as the translator. Later on, the same spelling was applied to the acronym coined by the family to name a music trio with their three daughters (Silva-Villar, L., & Silva Villar, S. 2015 b).
The second piece stamps the portmanteau Espakalpe, made up by Pérez Hervás for the title of his book. According to its introduction it means “Es para Calpe” (This is to Calpe), implying that the owners of the publishing house Calpe took advantage of all the work carried out by Espasa’s employees (Pérez Hervás 1935, pp. 7-8, cited in Silva Villar 2015, p. 40).
