Abstract

Inspired in part by the works of the Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923), The Reception is an informal group portrait of family members at a wedding reception. Although based on photographs, the painting is very much a 'moment in time' and suggestive of a sense of narrative. The painting was made quickly and initially conceived as a sketch for a larger work. The figures are depicted from behind and thus we as viewers are not able to take any visual queues from the vantage pint. Instead, the focus of the image gravitates around the arrangement of hands on the central figure.
