    Abstract

Focusing on the flow and misuse of ammunition can help reduce gun violence. Focusing on this particular element offers several possible advantages: unlike firearms, ammunition must be replenished once used, so limiting its flow can “starve” these types of weapons. In addition, the time from transfer to use tends to be shorter, increasing the likelihood that national policies will have an immediate effect in reducing gun violence. In summary, a systematic investigation of the flow of ammunition would help to articulate policies to respond to this problem, with the possibility of reducing the repercussions of violence related to firearms.

The purpose of this Manual is to provide users with a step-by-step guide to ammunition profiling that provides an overview of small arms ammunition (MAP) that has been diverted, trafficked, or misused in affected environments. for gun violence. The main benefit of using this Handbook is to help establish an evidence base that enables policy formulation to curb the flow of ammunition that would otherwise end up in unauthorized hands or lead to unauthorized use. The accumulated data and lessons learned from settings affected by armed violence can then be channeled to higher levels to guide processes at the multilateral and global levels. Therefore, the Manual contributes in two different ways to the work in this area:
