    Abstract

The paper analyses the impact of tourism, in the province of Ragusa, resulting from the location of the detective television series Detective Montalbano. We elaborated the data relative to the arrivals and presences of Italians and foreigners from 1990 to 2008 to obtain the parameters of the index of tourism density TD and of tourism significance TS for the new Forte-Mantovani tourism development Index, which consists of the arithmetic media of the two index. Taking Italy as a base and comparing the index of tourism development of the provinces of Ragusa and of Sicily, the variables which have influenced the national dynamic have been eliminated from the tourism dynamics of the two communities taken into consideration. A different development of tourism in the province of Ragusa has resulted in respect to Sicily, using Italy as a base, which would not be explainable without the Montalbano effect. Ragusan tourism resists better to the period of crises, because in the fashion cycle of tourism it has become a “classi-cal product”. The research has also taken into consideration the new regional promotion policies of tourism through the film loca-tion.
