Abstract

This performance is the second of several case studies I am investigating as part of my postdoctoral research project. This research project is testing ‘Evaluative Performance’ and its ability to capture and share lived experience, and impacts associated with projects of various scales and disciplines. Specifically, how arts-based methods of data collection, analysis and dissemination can contribute to the need for valuing the voices of citizens in a variety of impact strategies.

This performance has emerged from the collaboration of my shared research interests with my colleague Dr Francesco Chiaravalloti from the University of Amsterdam. We met in July 2022, and at the time Francesco was planning his secondment as part of the SpaceX RISE programme with Coventry Biennial. He was interested in how arts organisations are asked to account for the value they create for their stakeholders in the context of growing government control over public expenditure. We therefore were interested in way in which that alternative strategies might be employed to provide a contextual understanding of the values created by arts organisations. With the Coventry Biennial as a case study, we set out on a journey whereby we wanted to find out what the Biennial valued about itself, and how that manifested from the perspectives of, and between staff, stakeholders, artists and members of the public.

I would like to thank the European Union’s Horizon 2020 fund and Coventry University Centre for Dance Research and Centre for Creative Economies for contributing funds to facilitate the research and performance. I would also like to thank the Coventry Biennial for being so generous with their time to support this research process.
