Abstract

The “classroom” or “school” was not a well-defined space in antiquity. Separate buildings were sometimes used as teaching spaces, but more often classes were held in the teacher’s home or in the open air. Because of the variety and fluidity of types of teaching spaces, the papers examine, not the school or the classroom, but “knowledge spaces”—the many and varied ways in which space was organized in educational contexts in the ancient world.
