Abstract

The effects of Nd:YAG laser surface treatment on 316LS stainless steel and titanium-aluminium-vanadium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V in terms of cell adhesion and cell proliferation was investigated. The surfaces were examined using various microscopic and chemical analysis techniques Cell adhesion and proliferation tests were conducted to determine the effect that laser treatment has on the bio-metals in terms of increasing or decreasing cell adhesion and cell proliferation. It was found that for 316L stainless steel, laser surface modification resulted in a rougher surface, and this in turn led to decreased cell proliferation and adhesion. The results for Ti-6Al-4V alloy were just the opposite, the surface became smoother and enhanced cell activity was observed.
