Indonesian Schools Fertile Ground for Religious Intolerance and Radicalism

Abstract

Religious intolerance and radicalism in the education sphere showed an upward trend in Indonesia. It may be the case therefore that the problem can impact harmony and peace and maybe grow to become an extremist movement and terrorism. This study will focus on how the theory and practice of education in Islamic schools are implemented and propose a new concept to solve the problem of intolerance and radicalism. The study is conducted by observing the process of teaching and learning in Islamic schools, interviewing teachers, principals, students, parents, and leaders in local government, anddoing forum group discussions in schools society as well as collecting documents related to the problem. The impact of the study is on the government, researchers, practitioners, and the whole society. In subsequent, the contribution of the study for knowledge is generating theoretical and educational concepts that could be used in the school areas.
