    Abstract

Increased competitions in industries are becoming very common nowadays as companies thrive to maintain a competitive edge over their counterparts in the same industry. This motivates top management of the industries to investigate the possibility of adopting sophisticated IT technologies in order to continuously improve their performance.
In order to gain full understanding of how the powder coating system of a manufacturing company works and how component parts and resources interact, two conceptual modelling techniques were used, IDEF0 and flowchart. An “As Is” simulation model was developed for the entire system using ARENA simulation package. Various key performance indicators are considered such as the average time the component parts spend waiting for the resource and the average number of waiting parts.
The model was verified with the aid of Arena inbuilt functions as well as 3D modelling of the system using the Arena visual designer. The experimental design consisted of four scenarios. The results obtained from one of the scenarios showed significant improvement of both utilisation of the unloading resource and waiting time of parts.
