Abstract

This paper belongs to a larger research project entitled “Exchange
Networks and Parallel Currencies: Theoretical approaches and the case of
Greece”, which studies economic activity without the use of any official currency.
The criteria used to include a phenomenon into the object of the
research have been: (i) the transactions take place without the use of any
type of money or the currency used in the transactions is not official, e.g. not
created by a state authority; (ii) the transactions, even those who just give
away stuff for free, are not performed within the framework of charity; (iii)
