Abstract

This qualitative study is based on seven life stories of Rwandan exiles who were born and/ or raised in exile and returned to post-genocide Rwanda for the first time. Despite the waves of displacement throughout Rwandan history, there is a dearth of research on their diverse experiences of homecoming and educational trajectories. Using homecoming theory and life course perspective, this article examines the complex educational trajectories of returnees, from education in exile to homecoming. By so doing, it highlights the unique challenges and transitions of homecoming as a turning point and how homecoming has shaped social connections and self-perception.
