Abstract
This chapter considers how the game of Association football has evolved and the role of the referee within this process. The chapter focuses on the early forms of football, the emergence of the referee, the influence of the public schools and wider society, violence towards referees and early support for referees as a group. The chapter frames the evolving role of the match official within the shifts in British society that occurred before and after codification in 1863, providing a backdrop for many of the decisions made during the period up until 1900.
