FINAL YEAR INDUCTION – RE-MOTIVATION AND RE-ENGAGEMENT

    This paper was given at the 14th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE2012), hosted by the Department of Design Sciences, Product Development, Artesis University College Antwerp. It was held on 6-7 September 2012. Author's note: This paper was delivered at the ‘Engineering and Product Design Education’ conference, Antwerp, September 2012. The conference committee received around 277 contributions. After reviewing abstracts, the Review Board selected 130 contributions to be included in the proceedings. This study was seeking to evaluate the impact of a new Project Proposal week for final year Product Design students at Bournemouth University (2011-2012). The paper offers a detailed evaluation of the experience, the experience was deemed to be a success by both staff and students and a similar experience this year has already begun, along with a plan to roll out the principles to all design courses within the Framework. A methodology was required that would collect rich, reflective and subjective data about the experience of the week and development of a proposal from a student point of view. Along with this was a methodology that would compare the output, ie quality of proposals with previous years. A qualitative methodology was chosen with a qualitative questionnaire being selected for data collected from students and a criteria driven comparison for project proposals. Because of the large number of students involved, a questionnaire was considered the most appropriate data collection method. This initiative was a first attempt at resolving what had become a growing problem. As such it can be described as successful. The initiative succeeded in re-engaging students with their studies and enabling them to begin to understand the requirements of an honours level course in product design. The initiative was also successful in improving the problem formulation, and level of innovation of the project proposals. This is evidenced by an increase in the range of projects proposed and the nature of them as evidenced.
