Abstract
Hans Morgenthau’s concept of the political is a relatively little addressed, though being central to his thought. Even before his emigration to the United States, he critically engaged with Carl Schmitt’s conceptualisation, arguing that not all conflicts can or have to be solved through jurisdiction. Rather, conflicts, but not in the absolute Schmittian sense, were for Morgenthau the fundament for the perpetuation of the political realm; a realm which Morgenthau considered to be the basis of democracies. However, due to his Weimar experiences, Morgenthau saw the political in danger and aimed to confront this rising depoliticisation. In order to do so, Morgenthau promoted an ethics of responsibility for politicians and considered it the duty of scholars to critically accompany this process of repoliticisation through a maieutic process.
