    Abstract

This thesis studies the creation of a Design Template (DT) for designing specific products for consumers. It aims to develop an easy-to-operate design system, where consumers are interacting with design choices instead of operating conventional Computer Aided Design (CAD). This will help the end users, who use the templates to configure aspects of the design and thereby endorse them to manufacture the products themselves. It is also required that the progression of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technology be considered as it gives easy access to the consumers to enable the fabrication process. The relationships and progression of CAD, consumers, customisation and ALM are described in the literature study. Then, a sample survey is undertaken to find out the needs and the potential market for DTs. As an example, a DT of a toy car has been built as a case.
