Abstract
After the first charity programs and early legal initiatives for children, basic research since the early 20th century has achieved important insights into the aetiology and therapy of malnutrition in children. In the mid 1960s, this led to the abandonment of monocausal explanations of nutritional deficiencies and thus favoured the development of intersectoral public health and nutrition strategies. Aside from ethical aspects, scientific results and knowledge from health
and nutrition programs were incorporated into international agreements on human rights. Binding requirements for assuring children’s health and nutrition were first incorporated into the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was passed in 1989 and has since been ratified by almost all contract states. With this background, the objectives and the necessary strategies to reduce malnutrition and undernourishment in various parts of the world can be deduced.
