Abstract
The Country Information and Policy Unit (CIPU) of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, performs two roles. It aims to produce consistent and unbiased information on the countries from which asylum seekers come (known as country of origin information), to be used by those involved in asylum applications. It is also responsible for policy development and providing policy advice about these countries. This research undertaken by the Home Office examined how the information was compiled and used at the main stages of the asylum process, in order to assess whether it met current needs. The views expressed in these findings are those of the authors, not necessarily those of the Home Office (nor do they reflect Government policy).
