Abstract
The concluding chapter seeks to provide an overview of the book and the chapters therein. The chapter considers the evolution and growth of officiating research, seeking to understand where current trends and advancements in understanding have emerged and what we can learn about developments in this research area. Building on the key points, arguments, and policy implications from the chapters throughout the book, this chapter seeks to identify important areas of future research in order to provide ideas and insight for both sports organizations and academic scholars. Areas such as the introduction and use of technology in officiating, and the impact on aspects such as the use of video assistant referees and the spread of online abuse and aggression are identified, as are related barriers to the continuation of sports officials, such as negative experiences impacting on mental health and well-being. Skill acquisition for officials and the use of fitness testing for training and performance are also given consideration in terms of their future research directions and agendas.
