Abstract
The first commercial airframe application of high strength beta titanium alloys came when Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al (Ti-10-2-3) was selected for use in the landing gear assemblies of the Boeing 777. Recent work has considered the replacement of Ti-10-2-3 with a variation on the Russian alloy VT22, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5-5-5-3). This paper compares the effect of hot working and the microstructural evolution of Ti-10-2-3 and Ti-5-5-5-3 during subtransus isothermal forging. It was found that the shallow β transus approach curve and the insensitivity of the microstructure to changes in processing variables of Ti-5-5-5-3, compared to Ti-10-2-3, should make it a more predictable and reliable alloy to process using hot working techniques.
