    Abstract

“Desperate to gain respect and power, a timid disabled girl of a downtrodden minority summons a demon, but will the cost be worth it?”

Cast is a feature-length fantasy screenplay that tells the story of one outcast individual’s opportunity to change the world. Faced with the dilemma of keeping a secret or changing the fortunes of those she loves but at a price, Mildred must decide whether to summon the aid of a demon.

Mildred is a Mundane—a member of the lowest class—who has a physical disability. Her future looks bleak as she and other Mundanes slave away in the service of the Enchanted. Amongst the restrictions on the Mundanes is the prohibition on practising magic.

Mildred meets a strange man on the run. He holds the spell that can change her world: the spell that can challenge the divide, free the Mundane from the Enchanted and gain respect as a disabled individual. Ignoring the man’s warnings, Mildred casts the spell, releasing a demon that feeds on her soul. Now she must realise her own strengths, rescue her family and destroy the demon before it’s too late.

This is a story of a young disabled woman’s journey to discover her inner strengths, existing power and identity as she challenges societal values. The commentary discusses my creative decisions
