Abstract
If measurement data are to be used on-line, particularly for feedback control, then measurement validation must now include in-line fault detection. New sensor technologies, ranging from micro-sensors to on-line process analysers, are using improved techniques of fault detection. Self-validating sensors, uncertainty monitoring, fault detection and remote diagnosis are all close. The introduction of digital instruments, comms and validation within industry will lead to enormous benefits. Standards and interfaces are discussed.
