Abstract
A 3 month participant observation case study of an elderly couple coping with chronic and acute health issues is used to highlight the everyday problems faced by the oldest in society. The increasing number of the elderly, policies and the wish of elderly people to retain independence in their own homes is juxtaposed against the reality of equipment, services and practices which are not fit for purpose. The paper closes with a set of recommendations for greater awareness, interest and funding for research in this area
