A Case Study Investigation of Sustainable Yogic Agriculture and Reflections on its Relation to Biodynamic Agriculture

Abstract

‘Sustainable Yogic Agriculture’ (SYA) is an emergent farming system that has been receiving increased attention in India and worldwide. SYA is premised on the philosophy that ‘as the food so the mind and as the mind so the body’, drawing a parallel with biodynamics.
The main objective of this paper is to provide an overview of SYA, its methods and effects and from there to explore whether its practices would be applicable to biodynamics.
The methodology comprises a review of the existing published literature on SYA methods in conjunction with a farm case study and interviews conducted with farmers practicing SYA and biodynamics during a visit to India in November 2017.
The results of the literature review, interview and case study indicate positive effects using SYA in both qualitative and quantitative dimensions. SYA research trials performed to date appear positive but lack sufficient detail in the publications to determine robustness.
Biodynamics emphasises more practical techniques whereas the core component of SYA is the practice of Raja Yoga meditation, emphasising ‘inner’ change as a precondition for ‘outer’ changes. Both movements share many agro-ecological aims and similar worldviews in some areas.
In conclusion SYA methods could form synergies with biodynamics in the context of Indian agriculture and worldwide. Further research is encouraged as the technique is simple with no-cost and possibly a beneficial enhancement to organic and agro-ecological practices.
