    Abstract

A bonnet 10 for covering an engine compartment of a vehicle (5 figure 1) comprises an outer skin 11, at least one vent aperture 20 in the outer skin to allow the passage of air to or from the engine compartment, a grille 6 fitted in the or each aperture and at least one strap 18, 19 extending across the or each aperture below the grille. The bonnet may comprise an inner skin which is integrally formed with the strap/s (12 figure 4), or the strap/s may be interposed between the inner and outer skins. The edges of the straps may be hidden by the webs and ribs of the grille located above. If the vehicle should collide with a pedestrian, the straps support the grille and prevent spreading of the aperture, thus preventing the head of the pedestrian from partially pushing through the aperture.
