Description

SACOMM’s 40th annual conference was held in Potchefstroom this year, between the 30th of September and the 3rd of October. Bernadine Jones, PhD candidate in Media Studies at the Centre for Film and Media Studies, won one of five Best Paper awards at the conference for her paper entitled, “Semiotics of Television News: Oil and Water?” The Best Paper award was adjudicated by a blind paper reviewing panel and was unanimous.

Bernadine’s paper presents a methodological approach for analysing television news systematically, using a combination of semiotics, discourse analysis, and political economy theory. The paper suggests a “best practice” approach to analysing a complex multi-layered meaning system such as television news, but the methodology could be applied to any moving image cultural product.
