    Research Interests

Dr. Vinothkannan Mohanraj currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Hydrogen Research Theme at Coventry University. He collaborates with Prof. Oliver Curnick, Prof. John Graves, and Dr. Rong Lan on multiple projects within the Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS).

His specialization lies in the development of polymer electrolyte membranes and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), which he tests across various electrochemical devices, including PEM/AEM/bipolar water electrolyzers, fuel cells, and batteries. Additionally, he focuses on the development of electrocatalysts for electrochemical applications.

He earned his Ph.D. in Energy Storage and Conversion Engineering, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) in 2018. His doctoral research primarily concentrated on enhancing polymer electrolyte membranes for durable, low-humidity, and high-temperature fuel cells. During his doctoral studies (2015-2018), he was awarded the Merit International Student Scholarship at JBNU.

Following his Ph.D., Dr. Mohanraj continued as an Assistant Research Professor at JBNU until 2021. In June 2021, he assumed the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST), participating in the Brain Korea-21 project. His work involved developing membranes for zinc bromine redox flow batteries, NOx electrolyzers, and fuel cells. In late 2022, he relocated to the UK to join Newcastle University as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, where he is engaged in the development of pore-filling reinforced membranes for durable AEM electrolyzers.
