Research Interests

Vijay's interdisciplinary research interests focus on Crisis and Disaster Management (Natural and Human-driven Disasters); Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility; Sustainable Tourism and the Green / Circular Economy Approach; and socio-economic and environmental aspects of Aviation and Space Tourism. Vijay has supervised PhD students to completion and externally examined several PhD/DBA candidates for Universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

He continues to supervise PhD researchers and welcomes applications from prospective PhD candidates.

Vijay works for Coventry Business School. Before joining Coventry in April 2018, he led College Research and Enterprise activities as Associate Professor and was Head of Subject for the Department of Tourism, Aviation and Event Management within the University of West London. Previously, Vijay worked for Anglia Ruskin University Business School as Deputy Head of Department for Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Tourism; and as Principal Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in the Faculty of Management at Bournemouth University.

Through inspiring research projects, he continues to challenge the traditional approaches and aims to make a true and lasting positive impact for real-world industries, and also for societies living in remote and sensitive regions (e.g, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kashmir and Fukushima).

As principal investigator and co-investigator, Vijay has successfully completed around ten different research projects that were generously funded by national and international organizations, including UNESCO (2002-03), Rufford Foundation (2002), Royal Geographic Society (2004), UNESCO (2005), British Academy (2007), British Academy (2009), Higher Education Innovation Fund (2010-12), Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (2013), British Council (2015), British Council (2018-2022), and others. These projects fit under the broader theme of sustainable development, focused on building business resilience in regions affected by natural and human-driven disasters (e.g, 2004 Asian tsunami, 2011 Tohoku earthquake & tsunami, Northern Ireland conflict, and the protracted Kashmir conflict).

In terms of publications, Vijay led two edited Books for Routledge (in 2012 and 2015), with many research articles published in peer-reviewed international journals (CABS 3-4*) as well as in high-impact sources, such as UNESCO and The World Financial Review.

In addition to delivering several conference keynote presentations and many conference papers, Vijay was 'invited' by a range of policy agencies to speak on sustainability issues, including United Nations Secretariat, UNEP Economy/SCP branch, and UNESCO and the private sector. His expert views / interviews appeared in several broadcast media sources such as the BBC (TV & Radio News), ITV, Sky Tv News, United Nations (Web TV), and print media (e.g, Airports International, and Asian Voice).

Throughout his academic and leadership career, Vijay developed several innovative PG and UG programmes (taught, blended / online and Exec Ed), pathways & modules and managed teaching for thousands of students in the UK and several other countries (via TNE partnerships) - delivered by diverse academic teams in the fields of: Business Administration, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Tourism, Aviation and Event Management.

After completing his PhD (full-time) from the University of Exeter in the UK, Vijay worked for Kent Business School (Uni of Kent) as Post-doctoral Research Associate. His Masters was from Pondicherry University in India.
