Personal profile

Research Interests

Remote island states are often locked into, and heavily reliant upon, imported fossil fuels. This has a detrimental impact on their environments, economies and societies, and results in low levels of energy security. These same islands invariably have favourable renewable energy resources (solar, wind, bioenergy and marine), and storage potential (pumped storage hydro, battery or marine compressed air). My research relates to the application of sustainable energy technologies to aid the transition of these fossil-fuel reliant energy systems towards clean and sustainable energy systems. Areas of interest include:

  • Wind resource studies for small island states
  • Renewable energy technology adaptation for tropical latitudes
  • Energy system modelling
  • Integration of EVs into island energy grids
  • Storage options for small island states
  • Decentralised energy systems for improving energy system resilience to natural hazards
  • Building design for tropical latitudes
