My PhD project explores the concept and reality of 'autonomy' within agroecology and food sovereignty. It considers how material and ideological detachment from mainstream systems enhances self-determination, and the extent to which localisation is possible and desirable in the face of political-economies of scale. Fieldwork is with small-scale agroecological and organic farms in Cornwall, England and Calabria, Italy.
