    Biography

    I studied Archaeology and Ethnography as an Undergraduate and a Research Scholar at Leicester, my PhD was on the expression of ethnic identity in material cultural. I also trained in and taught photography film and video-making, producing short documentaries and educational programmes.

     

    I taught Visual and Material cultures at Leeds Metropolitan University from 1992, establishing and running the MA in Cultural Studies in 1996. I joined Coventry University in1997. I led postgraduate media courses from 2001 managing all the department’s PG courses from 2005.

     

    I became Head of the Media Department in 2009, and led it until 2015. In that role I authored the Department’s ‘Open Media Strategy’, championing innovative T&L strategies, which underpinned the rise of the Department from 85th to the top 15 in the UK (Guardian),. In 2012 I led the JISC-funded Coventry Open Media Classes project, which explored the use of radically open and connected approaches to media education.

     

    In 2013 i wrote the proposal for an innovative cross-university center to explore disruption in Higher Ed. and from March 2014 to September 2015 was Co-director of the £3.4M Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL). Work that has been the subject of multiple case-studies by JISC, as well as Sony Ericsson, Apple and Adobe.

     

    In September 2015 I was appointed Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, and was acting Executive Dean - PVC from March 2016 to September 2017, my substantive role became Academic Dean in December 2016. I provide strategic leadership and management to the Faculty, which comprises the Schools of Art & Design; Humanities and Media & Performing Arts. I manage a team of 5 Associate Deans, 3 Heads of School and an Operations Manager. I currently sit on the University’s Charitable and Hardship Fund Board, Academic Board and have extensive experience of University committees, boards and procedures.     

      

    I have researched and published in the fields of material cultures, cultural analysis/cultural politics, innovative pedagogies and disruption in higher education fields I continue to have a huge enthusiasm to explore. I contributed to the Disruptive Media Research Group and am now an associate member of the Post-digital Cultures Faculty Research Centre.   

    Research Interests

    Ethnoarchaeology, research methods, ethonogrpahic anthroplogical approaches, media and cultural theory; Cultural and Media theory focused on the cultural location/meaning and politics of technology - postmaterialism; Material cultures - especially objects and possessions which mark out personal, historical and cultural identities; The connections between innovations in media (open/disruptive media) - and innovative radical pedagogies in Higher Education
