My PhD research looked into the acute physiological response to exercise in end-stage renal disease with a specific focus on cardiac stunning during haemodialysis and potential of intra-dialytic exercise to reverse this effect. My current research has followed on from my PhD work looking into the causes of hypoxia during haemodialysis. I am also involved with the HIIT or MISS UK randomised control trial, investigating the effects of different intensities of exercise cardiac rehabilitation on cardiac structure and function using trans-thoracic echocardiogram. Our team is also looking into the effects of specific microRNAs that are responsible for cardioprotective with exercise cardiac rehabilitation to better justify cardiac rehabilitation for reducing pathological remodelling post-myocardial infarction.
