Personal profile


I am a reader in Mathematics Physics at Coventry University. I obtained my first degree, MA in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy from Aberdeen University in 1982. My postgraduate research was carried out under the supervision of Prof Roger Penrose and Dr Nicholas Woodhouse in the geometric physics group at Oxford University, resulting in the award of the degree of DPhil in 1988. Since 1986 I have been a member of the School of Computing, Electronics and Maths at Coventry University.

I have published numerous research papers, and have been invited to speak at several international conferences and meetings. I am a Member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and of the London Mathematical Society.

Liquid crystals; Mathematics and natural philosophy; Relativity and geometry in physics

Vision Statement

I have been carrying out a research programme in aspects of mathematical general relativity for many years. The driving idea behind this programme has been to use ideas motivated by Penrose’s twistor programme, in particular the idea of the space of null geodesics, to investigate causal structure in space time. This has led to results which provide fresh insight into causal structure and the geometric and topological structure of space-time. I have also undertaken collaborative research in other areas, such as the theory of liquid crystals, bringing to them a geometric insight developed in my work in relativit.

My future plans include applying some of the mathematical ideas and techniques which I have used to date to a new area, namely fluid dynamics, thereby strengthening my links with other members of the Applied Mathematics Research Centre.
